Recently, they have approached and entered the attosecond regime, which holds new promises for single-molecule imaging and studying nonlinear and ultrafast phenomena like localized electron dynamics. The technological evolution of XFELs toward well-controllable light sources for precise metrology of ultrafast processes was, however, hampered by the diagnostic capabilities for characterizing X-ray pulses at the attosecond frontier. In this regard, the spectroscopic technique of photoelectron angular streaking has successfully proven how to non-destructively retrieve the exact time-energy structure of XFEL pulses on a single-shot basis. By using artificial intelligence algorithms, in particular convolutional neural networks, we here show how this technique can be leveraged from its proof-of-principle stage toward routine diagnostics at XFELs, thus enhancing and refining their scientific access in all related disciplines.Sociocultural theory and reading comprehension: The scaffolding of readers in an EFL contexthttps://puma.uni-kassel.de/bibtex/2a70ffbd77bd5a3adc5331459129eb5d8/00993573009935732017-04-30T12:22:50+02:00Sociocultural theory and reading comprehension: The scaffolding of readers in an EFL context R. The basic purpose was to clarify how learners reading comprehension and strategy use could be affected by the types of teaching techniques and how high and low proficiency learners profited from the intervention. Iranian EFL students were used as the participants of the study. A NELSON language proficiency test, a researcher-made reading comprehension test and a reading strategy questionnaire (adopted from Phakiti, 2006) were used as data collection instruments. The results showed that the sociocultural teaching techniques leads to better reading comprehension and reading strategy use for EFL learners. Also shown that proficiency factor played a determining role in reading comprehension development of the two groups of this study and that the low proficiency learners, especially in sociocultural group, outperformed the high proficiency learners. However, the interaction effect between proficiency factor and teaching method was non-significant for reading strategy use; leading to the conclusion that strategy use of the learners was not affected by their proficiency level. This indicates that the patterns of cognitive and metacognitive strategy scores are similar for students of low and high proficiency.SYMMETRICAL AND ASYMMETRICAL SCAFFOLDING IN ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION OF IRANIAN EFL LEARNERShttps://puma.uni-kassel.de/bibtex/2f734468a065e2e6c6968784e44db2e73/00993573009935732017-04-30T12:22:00+02:00SYMMETRICAL AND ASYMMETRICAL SCAFFOLDING IN ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION OF IRANIAN EFL LEARNERS S. Studies of personal identity, names and self-acceptance, and attention and memory for one's name are reviewed. A common method of studying identity is the use of questionnaires of the "Who Am I" variety. Psychologists and sociologists have investigated names and spontaneous self-concept and names and the development of self-identity. Experiments have shown that the mention of one's name by others has the power to elicit the individual's attention. Experiments with memory have hinted that memories for personal and self-relevant information may be organized around names and accessed by means of them. At a time when the place and significance of myth in society has come under renewed scrutiny, Myth, Literature, and the Unconscious contributes to shaping the new interdisciplinary field of myth studies. The editors find in psychoanalysis a natural and necessary ally for investigations in myth and myth-informed literature and the arts. At the same time the collection re-values myths and myth-based cultural products as vital aids to the discipline and practice of psychoanalysis. The volume spans a vast geo-cultural range (including ancient Egypt, India, Japan, nineteenth-century France, and twentieth-century Germany) and investigates cultural products from the Mahābhārata to J. W. Goethe's opus and eighteenth century Japanese fiction, and from William Blake's visionary poetry to contemporary blockbuster television series. It encompasses mythic topics and figures such as Oedipus, Orpheus, the Scapegoat, and the Hero, while mobilising Freudian, Jungian, object relations, and Lacanian psychoanalytic approaches. Bringing together an international array of both leading and emerging researchers, Myth, Literature, and the Unconscious provides an exceptionally rich overview of the concerns and exciting possibilities of this new interdisciplinary field while simultaneously contributing to scholarship on the literary texts and psychoanalytic concepts it evokes.
