Manage literature, publications and bookmarks#

PUMA offers you a variety of ways to manage your publications and bookmarks and also to perform literature search. On this page you will find everything you need to use PUMA as a standard literature database (e.g. Citavi, EndNote, etc.).

Bookmarks - The Basics:#

Introduction: Bookmarks make it possible to use the WorldWideWeb like a book. A bookmark allows you to remember the exact address of an online document. PUMA gives you the ability to store/manage bookmarks centrally.

Add bookmarks#

Goal: This tutorial shows you how to add a web page as a bookmark.

  1. Click on the menu item "add post" in the (main menu). A sub-menu appears.
  2. Click on "post bookmarks" with the left mouse button.
  3. In the field URL, enter the address (URL) of the web page that you want to add as a bookmark. Then click on "Continue".
  4. In the following step, you will be asked to enter some additional data. These are:
    • URL: (Will automatically be transferred from the previous step)
    • title: Enter the title/name of the page.
TIP: Unter the textbox, you can see the web page's original title in small blue letters as a suggestion. By clicking on it, you can add it as title.
    • Describtion: You can enter your own comment or you can also store a little abstract.
    • tags: tags help you to organize your bookmarks/publications in PUMA better (for further information about tags, click here). You can add as many tags as you like. Tags are separated from each other by spaces.
TIP 1: If you want to use a tag consisting of several words (such as 'computer science department'), then use PascalCase - such as 'ComputerScienceDepartment.'
TIP 2: PUMA makes suggestions for tags based on the website's URL and your description (see "recommendation"). By clicking on the recommended tags, you can add them to the bookmark.
  5. Click on "Save" to store the bookmark.
  6. The bookmark is now stored. Please note that it may take some time (one second to several minutes) until a newly stored bookmark can be found by the search function.

Tips for searching and archiving#

  • PUMA only stores the web address of a web document (HTML page, video, image, etc.), but not the document itself. It can therefore happen that you saved an address of a web document but later the document is no longer available (e.g. because the document was deleted, the provider/website no longer exists or the document has been moved, etc.). We therefore recommend to store important documents on your computer (make a backup).
  • In addition to this, please remember that a web document can be changed at any time. In this case it is also recommended to make backups on your computer. Also it is common practice in scientific work to ALWAYS add the date of visiting an internet document when it is cited (you can enter this information into the field "description").
  • PUMA supports the RFC 7089 specification. This makes it possible to show bookmarks in PUMA like they were stored, even if the page has changed. To use this feature, you have to install the Memento plugin in your browser. The plugin is available for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Publications - The Basics:#

Introduction: In PUMA, 'publications' means all kinds of documents (articles, monographs, etc.). You can create and manage your own or third-party publications (for example as the basis for a scientific research).

Add publications#

Goal: This tutorial shows you how to add a new publication in PUMA, e.g. to create a publication list later.

  1. Move the pointer over the menu item "add post" in the Main Menu. A sub-menu appears.
  2. Click on "post publication" in the menu by pressing the left mouse button.
  3. There are four different possibilities to add new publications:
    • manual: You can add all entries manually.
      1. Enter all required data into the appropriate fields.
      2. Click on "post".
      3. The next dialog allows you to add additional information. You can also skip this step by clicking directly on "Save" to store the publication.
    • BibTeX/EndNote snippet: This option allows you to import the data from almost any literature management program (for example Citavi). View instructions how to import publications.
    • uplaod file: This option allows you to upload EndNote and BibTeX files to PUMA to import them automatically. View instructions how to import publications.
    • ISBN/DOI - the fastest way: Allows you to enter publications by ISBN, ISSN, or DOI.
      1. Fill in the boxes with the ISBN, ISSN or DOI.
      2. Click on "post".
      3. The data is automatically collected from various catalogs.
      4. If you agree with the displayed data, click on "save".
    • scan code: This option allows you to add a publication by scanning its ISBN code with your webcam. A detailed description how to do this can be found in the next section "Add publications by scanning the ISBN code with your webcam".

Add publications by scanning the ISBN code with your webcam#

Goal: This tutorial shows you how to add a new publication in PUMA by scanning its ISBN code with your webcam.
Prerequisite: Your computer must have a built-in webcam or must be connected to an external webcam before you can start.

  1. Move the pointer over the menu item "add post" in the Main Menu. A sub-menu appears.
  2. Click on "post publication" in the menu by pressing the left mouse button.
  3. Click on "scan code". Your browser probably displays a warning message (e.g. "The website PUMA attempts to access your webcam"). You have to allow it to access to continue.
  4. Hold the publication's ISBN barcode nearly and clearly visible to the camera. If PUMA recognizes the ISBN barcode you can hear a sound as if a camera took a photo.
  5. The auto-detected data will be displayed. Check the data and complete/correct it if necessary. Finally, click on "save".

Publications and Bookmarks#

This section deals with functions in PUMA which you can apply to bookmarks as well as to publications.
